Make Steak Kabobs for $8.25
If I had to pick only one restaurant to eat at for the rest of my life (hypothetical situation), I would definitely pick a steak house! The delicious smell from grilled steaks is enticing from blocks away. One of my favorite things to order at steak houses are steak kabobs. I had tried making them years ago, but could never do it as good as a steak house could.
One day I was at a BBQ and someone brought vegetable kabobs to grill. I tried one, and it was amazing! I asked them (trying not to sound desperate) what their secret was. They told me that all they did was coat the kabobs with Italian dressing. From that point on, I have been making kabobs using Italian dressing. I now have people asking me what my secret is!
Homemade kabobs can still be expensive because of the ingredients. Fortunately, I am able to keep the cost of the meat low by marinating it. If you marinate the meat, you can buy cheaper cuts of steak and no one will know any different. The vegetables can still add cost, but if you buy them when they are in season you can make a ton of delicious kabobs for a low price.
Kabobs are fairly simple to make. For this post I chose to use steak, 1 sweet onion, 3 bell peppers (orange, green, and red), and mushrooms. You can use whatever vegetable or meat you want. If you choose to use chicken, you can use the same marinade recipe that you would for steak. I have also used pineapple, red onions, yellow peppers, poblano peppers, and cherry tomatoes. As long as you cut the vegetables and meat close to the same size, you can really be creative about what goes on the skewer.
The first thing you want to do is soak the wooden skewers in water, so they don’t burn on the grill (at least 30 minutes).
Next you want to marinate the meat. Cut meat into about 1″ pieces. Mix together lemon lime soda (any brand will do), soy sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper. Add meat, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
Now, cut the vegetables. I cut each bell pepper into 8 pieces, and the onion to match the size of the bell pepper pieces.
It’s time to assemble the skewers! I alternate vegetables and meat to make a diverse and colorful kabob. You can place your vegetables and meat however you want. Make sure you space each item, so it can cook evenly.
Lastly, coat each kabab with Italian dressing using a basting brush (I bought my basting brush at the dollar store). Now they are ready to grill! While grilling make sure you rotate them in order to make sure each side gets cooked evenly. When you rotate them brush with more Italian dressing to make them extra fantastic.
